TACOMA, Washington – With more than a dozen Canadian riders and bulls competing in the United States last weekend, Tanner Byrne (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) led the contingent, finishing tied for 14th at the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast event in Tacoma, Washington.

The 26-year-old’s 1-for-3 showing at the Tacoma Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, was highlighted by an 84.25-point ride aboard Acting Crazy (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Staci Wilks/N Bar Ranch) in Round 1. The out was a rematch for Byrne, last facing the bull in the championship round of last season’s stop in Tacoma, when the bovine athlete bested him in 3.87 seconds.

Byrne left the Evergreen State with 5 world points and $675. He is now ranked No. 43 in the world, 100 points outside of the Top 35.

Close behind, concluding the event 17th, was Dakota Buttar (Kindersley, Saskatchewan).

Delivering a similar 1-for-3 performance, Buttar earned his qualified ride aboard White Dynomite (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Wilks Ranch) in Round 2 for 83 points.

He is now No. 35 in the world, 7.5 points ahead of No. 36 Ruger Piva (Challis, Idaho).

While fellow Canuck Jordan Hansen (Okotoks, Alberta) was also competing in Tacoma, he failed to record a qualified ride, bucked off by Big Black Cat (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) in 3.51 seconds in Round 1, and Noa-Jack (EAH Song/Wallgren/6-C) in 5.25 seconds in Round 2.

Joining their rider counterparts were seven bovine athletes from Canada, hailing from Eno Bucking Bulls of Cochrane, Alberta and Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls of Nanton, Alberta.

Colt .45 (Wild Hoggs/Lou Streeter) and Homegrown (Eno Bucking Bulls) led the contingent, tying for the 10th highest bull scores of the event, with their matching 43.5 point bull scores. Colt .45 bested Taylor Toves (Stephenville, Texas) in 2.18 seconds in Round 1, while Homegrown dispatched Piva in 3.78 seconds during the championship round.

Also bucking were: Thunder Road (Eno Bucking Bulls), Tykro Pound Sand (Wild Hoggs/Corey Chmelnyk), Double Major (Wild Hoggs/Corey Chmelnyk) Morning Wish (Wild Hoggs/Trish Streeter) and Stuntman Hank (Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls).

While Tykro Pound Sand was covered by Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) for 84.25 points, and Stuntman Hank was taken to the 8-second whistle by Marcus Mast (Middlebury, Indiana), the remainder of the Canadian bulls will return home with another buckoff added to their resume.

Morning Wish bested 2018 PBR World Champion Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) in 5.39 seconds in Round 1, while Double Major, also out in Round 1, bucked off Claudio Montanha Jr. (Pacaembu, Brazil) at the 4.13-second mark, and Thunder Road sent Scottie Knapp (Edgewood, New Mexico) to the dirt in 4.25 seconds in Round 2.

Elsewhere in the PBR, three Canadian riders competed at the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s Casper Classic, in Casper, Wyoming.

Shay Marks (Sunnybrook, Alberta) led the trio, finishing ninth. His efforts were highlighted by an 83.5-point ride on Chicken George (Silent 7 Bucking Stock) in Round 1.

Close behind was Dayton Johnston (Milk River, Alberta) in 12th who also recorded a qualified ride in the first round, marked 80.5 points on Slamma Jamma (Danley Bucking Bulls LLC).

The trio was completed by Logan Biever (Claresholm, Alberta) who was bested by Bumble Bee (Bob Whisnant/Good Ol’ Boys) in 2.23 seconds.
